Tower Garden Reservoir Winterized

Tower Garden

To help keep the water warm in the reservoir,  after I installed the aquarium heater, I

needed to insulate it to help keep the cold away from the now warm water. I picked up a sheet of insulation foam board at the lumber yard, set the Tower Garden dolly on it upside down and stepped on the bottom of the dolly. This made a circle imprint into the foam board. I than took a key hole saw and cut out a circle of foam that fit inside of the ring of the dolly, insulating the bottom of the reservoir.

To make sure I do not have any problems with my Tower Garden tipping over in the wind I fasten it down with two 1/4″ bolts. I happened to have on hand some 1 1/2″ long bolts. I used a washer on the top and bottom and hand tighten a nut and I was done. When working on your Tower Garden, always hand tighten your nuts on your bolts. Over tightening them can crack the food grade plastic the Tower Garden is made from.

Next it was how do I insulate the sides of the reservoir? I  purchased from a local

greenhouse supply firm a insulating bubble wrap called Tek Foil. This material is about 1/2″ thick and looks like packing bubble wrap on steroids! I wrapped the insulation around the base of the Tower Garden reservoir tank and its top. When I did the top I cut a piece of bubble wrap insulation about 6″ wider than the width of the reservoir than cut a slit in the middle of it to about the half way point. This slit allowed me to wrap the insulation around the base of the Tower Garden.

If have learned the hard way over the years that tape I purchase at the hardware store does not hold outside over

the winter months on a project such as this. I purchase from Growers Supply a heavy duty greenhouse tape that is 3″ wide, has good adhesive properties and is made to withstand the outdoor environment. It is item number 101616. They also sell a double sided tape that I also use and recommend it highly also, item number 111050.
